Very interesting enterprise. Considering that bunker-fuel-burning container ships are a leading cause of air pollution, this project is good news. Small ships, though, only 9000 tons, smaller even than some of the largest sail-powered cargo ships of 100 years ago. The rig is an old idea, a configuration called DynaShip designed in the 1970s by a German engineer named Willhelm Prolss. To my knowledge the only vessel to employ this rig so far is the megayacht Maltese Falcon, launched in 2006. Much like a square-rigger, but designed with rotating masts, sails furled in the masts which open out between the booms, and a much more sophisticated understanding of the airfoil shapes. Glad to see it getting used, it will be interesting to see how it works outside of the Med and the Caribbean.
