A journal of boating history and boats in contemporary culture, from the Curator of Watercraft

The evening commute. In the days of style, successful New York businessmen did not lurch their way through traffic in the back of a Towncar. They had lavish “Express Commuters” or “Commuter Yachts” such as this to convey them to and from their Long Island estates. This cover from Motor Boating depicts what was I’m sure a typical view from the Brooklyn shore. It being the July issue, the poor fellow must have been working late. But we need not pity him too much.

One of my favorites of the type is Aphrodite, built by Purdy in 1937. A new book about Aphrodite came out this year, written by Allen Dinn. If you are in the region of Manhassat Bay, stop in to this talk on March 23.
