A journal of boating history and boats in contemporary culture, from the Curator of Watercraft

Watching a sailing race on Upper St. Regis Lake in the Adirondacks from a 1927 30’ Fay & Bowen launch. The boat is called Echo after Echo Camp on Raquette Lake, and is owned by the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. I “worked” on the restoration of this boat as a kid, and have done a little maintenance since.

The boats racing are the Idems, the oldest one-design class still actively racing on the original hulls. Eleven boats were built in 1900-1902, and the only one in retirement is at the AM. Designed specifically for Upper St. Regis by Clinton Crane in 1899.
