A journal of boating history and boats in contemporary culture, from the Curator of Watercraft

Canvas maker’s mark on a sail from the Wawona. These sails were made, we think, in the middle seventies from a deteriorating set of originals. They are traditionally made of cotton duck, (obviously) manila rope, and leather. Beautiful handwork. Unfortunately they have spent a few decades in a storage container, and have come out moldy and rotted. We spread them out to document them this past week, and to save a few examples of the workmanship.

We found a few of these stencils, which indicate the company that made the canvas bolts from which the sail itself was built. Unfortunately there was no mark from the sail loft. Working on that mystery now.
